Advertisement Techniques

An average American spends fifteen hours per week watching television. During that time, viewers are exposed to countless number of advertisements. Although not everyone is affected by all advertisements, each one of us is bound to become a "sucker" to advertisements sometime in our life. Billions of dollars are spent by American business in creating, running, testing, and measuring advertising effectiveness. American businesses utilize various advertising techniques to manipulate consumers to purchase their products. One essential element of advertising techniques is capturing the viewers' attention and making them remember the product after watching the commercial. Without accomplishing these tasks, the commercial is useless regardless of the quality of the product. One way of obtaining viewers' attention is to arouse their curiosity at the beginning of the commercial. For instance, a Powerade commercial had a football player painting his fingernails in a locker room before a game. The scene may seem peculiar to most viewers. The image intrigues viewers and leads them to keep watching the commercial. Slogans in commercials help viewers remember the products. Nike is one such commercial that has generated m

They focus on how their products can solve viewers' problems. Companies also utilize the status of celebrities and titles of professionals to convince consumers that their products are worth purchasing. By having a popular band in the commercial, Burger King must be attracting numerous viewers. The reason for their success is the consumers who buy into advertising tactics. After all, the consumers will be the ones to determine the effectiveness of the commercials. The desire is so commanding that they are willing to try anything to achieve it. During soap opera hours, commercials of household items such as dish detergents and toothpaste target housewives. There may be very little difference between a company's product and its competitors'. In the commercial, the band originally said they do not do commercials. The implied message was that if the Backstreetboys was willing to do something that they did not want to do to have whoppers, then these whoppers must taste extremely delicious. For example, if a doctor in John Hopkins said that Vioxx is effective in treating arthritis, then arthritis patients who saw the commercial would try the medicine. No one has discovered a magic secret that will ensure a winning advertisement every time. Some are willing to believe that the products being advertised hold the answers to their quests. Images presented on television and magazines manipulate consumers by appealing to their desires. Eating the product might even make them want to get up in the morning to go to school.

Small Business Ideas

A TUTORIAL ON GENERATING (rather than finding)
SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS

SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS

GENERATING SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS: PART 1
Finding vs Generating Business Ideas

Where's the best place to find small business ideas? This is going to sound really corny... the best place is in your own head. Still reading? Good. This is about generating small business ideas - not about finding small business ideas.

You'll see lot's of successful Internet entrepreneurs selling books or software that is guaranteed to show you how to duplicate their success.

It doesn't work like that!

Finding something that's unique, that you can create yourself and that people will pay for is difficult, but it's the only reliable, long-term way to make money on the Net. Take my word for it.

Ready?

If you're like most people, small business ideas don't just "pop" into your head while relaxing in front of the TV, so let's start with some research...

SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS

GENERATING SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS: PART 2
What People Buy Online

Software 29%
Books 17%
Music 16%
Computers 16%
Travel 10%
Other 12%

What does the top three have in common?

They can all be sold as either hard goods or electronic goods.

A popular myth on the Net is that hard goods don't sell as well as electronic goods. They do, but you'll save yourself a lot of time and headaches by going for an electronically deliverable product from the start.

A small business just can't sell hard goods at competitive prices - in most cases anyway. But with original electronic goods your small business can compete because production cost is almost zero. You set the price.

Here are some of the advantages of electronic goods:

  • Very cheap to produce and reproduce, making it doable for small businesses
  • No inventory hassles
  • No shipping hassles
  • Less hassles means less staff - which means less hassles...

Small business ideas based on electronic products are preferable simply because it's usually something that you can do - right now - from home - without spending a mountain of money.

I wrote a 37-page book on making money on the Net where I discuss this in more depth. This is a good place to start. Click here for more on the book.

Ok, so electronic products are the way to go if you have a small business - but what should it do?

SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS

GENERATING SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS: PART 3
Aligning Your Ideas With Key Human Needs

SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS

Always mould small business ideas around a key human needs. Security, for example, is a key human need - and because insurance companies provide security, they're in business.

They're giving people what they want.

Here are some key human needs, divided into primary needs (red) and secondary needs (green):

Acknowledgement

Adventure
Beauty
Challenge
Control
Education
Fitness
Food
Freedom
Friendship
Health
Hygiene
Independence
Information
Knowledge
Leisure
Love
Money
Power
Privacy
Protection / Shelter
Relaxation
Security
Self esteem
Sleep
Stability
Status
Time
Water

You might think that fulfilling a primary need is ideal. It's not.

Internet users are upper middle-class people. With the exception of health, they normally have their primary needs covered. Before you can sell to them you first have to convince them that your product is superior - make that far superior (people generally resist change when it comes to primary needs) to what they're using now.

Would you be tempted if an ad said free food?

No?

How about free course in basic Internet marketing?

See?

SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS

GENERATING SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS: PART 4
The Rules For Small Business Ideas

SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS

What do all good small business ideas have in common?

They obey these rules:

The quality must be beyond question.
This is always the first rule of any business. Good products have a way of selling themselves. Bad ones will make you wish you still had a day job. There's no compromise here. Get this one right before you do anything else.

It must be unique.
Or it should at least be presented in a unique way. The information in my Search Engine Yearbook is not unique. Anyone willing to spend 5 years researching search engines can do without the book - but that's my unique offer. I sell time. Readers get 5 years worth of research & experience in a neat package.

There should be an EXISTING demand for it
Small business owners often make the mistake of trying to create a demand for a new product. The simple truth is that creating a demand for your product is very, very expensive - that's why companies like Coca-Cola can do it and you can't. They have millions to spend on marketing. For a small business you should focus on satisfying existing demands.

It must be user-friendly
Off the top of my head, I can think of two really fantastic Internet products that never achieved commercial success because getting them to work was a nightmare. Don't expect the customer to download any additional software or plug-ins to get the thing to work. They won't.

It must be legal
Remember that the Internet is international. Is your product legal and safe everywhere? There's no need to go read up on the commercial laws of every country in the world. Just create a straight-forward, original, honest product and you'll be safe.

It has to be credible
If you're a well-established company with a proven track record, skip this step. If you're not, develop a product that can incorporate an evaluation version. If it's a book, give the table of contents and chapter 1 away for free. If it's software, offer a time-limited trial etc.

It should support repeat-business
This is not really a MUST, but it's a big plus if you can add it. A large part of Pandecta's success lies in our base of faithfulrepeat buyers. Quality comes into play again. Our Search Engine Yearbook readers know that it's a great product - and I make absolutely certain that they know there's a new Search Engine Yearbook every January. They all (well almost all) come back each January because they already know what they're getting for their money... and just to make sure we give them 25% off the regular price. Repeat business is pure gold.

SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS

GENERATING SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS: PART 5
Finding Your Product / Service

SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS

Before we dig in, keep in mind that there's only so much I can cram into a web page. If you're serious about succeeding online, consider getting a copy of "Ways To Make Money On The Net". It's an immediate download - and it will save you buckets of time and money later on. Click here for more information.

Ok, here's the overview:

STEP 1

Work through the secondary human needs listed above. Pick one that fall in your area of expertise - or better yet, one that really interests you.

For example, I'd choose independence, because that's something I can offer by giving people the skills to start a small or home-based business on the Internet.

Now refine that until you hit a do-able niche. Stay with me. This works.

From independence I got to small business advice. That's still too broad. We have to find a niche where we can be number 1. Small business advice specifically for Internet entrepreneurs... still too broad... more than just advice, I'll offer them experience. Better yet, I'll do all sorts of e-business experiments. I'll test everything from affiliate programs to selling stuff on eBay and report my findings... etc. etc.

Don't stop too soon. If it's too broad, you won't be able to compete. You'll waste a year trying and end up refining it anyway. The best small business ideas are laser-focused on a niche.

Niche niche niche! It's soooo important.

STEP 2

Ok, so I'm going to sell small business experience. The next step is to decide on format.

Software
I'd probably have to cut a cd and sell that, because software downloads are often too large. The truth is that I don't have fantastic programming skills and I don't want the hassle of having to ship the cd.

Electronic book
This has become a fairly popular product format. It's harder to get repeat business with an e-book, but from my experience with the Search Engine Yearbook I know its possible.

Free on your site
Why not? People love quality free stuff. Traffic could build to the point where you can make money promoting affiliate products and selling advertising space. Personally I'm not a great fan of this approach, but there are people who say it can be done. You could also consider giving limited information from the book away on your site with an "order" link for those interested in learning more. That's an approach I've had success with. In fact, you're on such a page now. This page (and others) are what we call "teasers" for the "Ways To Make Money On The Net" book I mentioned above.

Restricted access
A very efficient way of selling information online is to place it in a password protected section of your web site. It's not that difficult to set up. The downside is that people don't actually receive the product, which deals a blow to its perceived value.

E-mail
Sending the product via e-mail is, at the moment, a good option. You could, for example, create separate e-mail courses on creating a business plan, product development, promotion etc. The only downside is that people get so much junk email that your legitimate email is likely to get filtered out before reaching some of your customers. Sending products via email is becoming more of a hassle and will only improve when someone finds a solution to junk email. Hey, there's a great small business idea! It's a mammoth task, but the person who pulls it off will be a billionaire.

--- sidebar ---

7 years ebusiness experience,
37

STEP 3

Choose your price.

What does the competition charge?

Can you do better without cutting profits too much?

Do a search for your product on Yahoo! and go through the top category to find some competitors.

Who is your target market? Will your typical customer be willing to pay $20 or $200? Don't "settle" for what you'll be happy with - not when it comes to price. A higher price will add perceived value. Experiment until you find the barrier where sales start to drop off. Also keep in mind that your product should always exceed the customer's expectations.

What is your profile customer's age & income level? Younger buyers buy more impulsively but usually has less money.

High prices also leave the door open to competitors to develop something similar and offer it for less.

Low prices mean more sales - more sales DO NOT necessarily mean more money though. 10 items @ $5 each is less than 7 items @ $10 each. The main benefit of low prices is that - if you have a good quality product, you reach more people and therefore generate more word of mouth.

STEP 4

Test your product on your site before you spend time and money developing it.

Describe the product in detail. Ask visitors to pick a price they'd be willing to pay. When your product is ready for distribution, give a couple of copies away to people who are willing to sign up as beta testers. In exchange for the free product, they should, for example, agree to fill out a questionnaire after using the product for a month.

SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS

Whatever you sell, you absolutely HAVE to get people to your site. I can't possibly go into all the details here, so I'm sending you to my Search Engine Yearbook. It really shows you everything you need to know about search engines and everything you didn't know you needed to know. It's also a great example of an quality e-book if you're thinking of creating one yourself.

Free Internet Advertising
10 Highly Effective Free Internet Advertising Techniques

I believe strongly that Internet advertising techniques for online businesses should be battle-proven. These 10 free Internet advertising techniques worked for me. Apply them. They'll boost your sales through increased visibility and credibility.

The most critical (mostly free) Internet advertising technique for any online business is to optimize your site for the search engines. This page looks at alternative free Internet advertising techniques. To learn more about search engine advertising, please refer to the latest Search Engine Yearbook.

FREE INTERNET ADVERTISING TECHNIQUES
1...Awards & Competitions

The key to using awards as an Internet marketing device is in giving ratings - not prizes. It's cheaper, but the real benefit is that ratings enable you to get your online business noticed.

Pandecta, for example, lists the top 20 free business e-zines. For every e-zine that makes the list, we e-mail the author to congratulate him or her. That e-mail does two things:

(1) It is designed to convince the author that the Pandecta top 20 is an exclusive club, and that being rated there is a fantastic achievement (which it is).
(2) We attach this image for them to place on their sites to enhance the credibility of their own sales efforts.

FREE INTERNET ADVERTISING

We ask them to link the image to our site, but even if they don't, the icon gets our name out there. That is enough, because it creates brand awareness and we've registered our title-domain (pandecta.com). That way their visitors will still find us easily enough.

FREE INTERNET ADVERTISING TECHNIQUES
2...E-zines (Newsletters)

The amount of work required to maintain a top e-zine makes this marketing technique unsuitable for most. It is no good to send out an average e-zine. In Internet marketing, your e-zine is the image of you online business.

Give it away for free, include as little advertisements as possible and as much content as possible. Don't try to make money off your e-zine. It is a tool. It reminds people of your products and establishes you as an expert in your field.

FREE INTERNET ADVERTISING TECHNIQUES
3...Premiums

In the real world, premiums include coffee mugs, ties, key chains etc. A high quality logo and/or company name is printed on it and it is handed out for free.

An online business can also utilize all these in Internet marketing, but think about screen savers, backgrounds, mouse pointers, mouse pads etc. As long as it is free and looks great, people will use it and be reminded of your business every time they do.

When you have your premium ready to go, don't just advertise it on your site. Many sites on the Net list "free stuff". Submit your creations to as many of these sites as you can.

FREE INTERNET ADVERTISING TECHNIQUES
4...Speeches

This Internet marketing technique is not for everyone, but a great way to show that you are a leading authority in your field. When you speak before your local chamber of commerce or trade association, the spin-off publication can be substantial.

Speeches are the most effective offline Internet marketing technique.

FREE INTERNET ADVERTISING TECHNIQUES
5...Articles

The same advantages here as for speeches, with the added bonus of reaching a bigger audience over the Internet and the fact that you don't have those podium spot-lights in your eyes :-)

The e-zine world provides a fertile ground for your Internet marketing efforts. There simply are too many e-zines, so fresh content is highly valued. You shouldn't have too much trouble getting published. Don't just pitch your business - wrap your sales pitch in content that readers will appreciate and enjoy.

If you're going to offer the editor exclusivity, be sure to ask what his subscriber count is. Anything above 40 000 is good.

FREE INTERNET ADVERTISING TECHNIQUES
6...Bonuses

Ideally, every product you sell should include a bonus. It is a widely used marketing technique on the Internet so users almost expect it.

For example: "Buy this gardening book for just $17 and get a free 4-day e-mail course on creative garden design!".

The bonus should be a high quality product. Something you'd be able to sell on its own. That way you create that fuzzy feeling with prospective clients. Fuzzy? Yes fuzzy. Make them like you. They'll associate your business/products with that warm (fuzzy) feeling you get when you find a great bargain.

FREE INTERNET ADVERTISING TECHNIQUES
7...Free Samples

On the Internet, as in real life, free samples attract attention. If the sample is good, attention turns into new sales.

At Pandecta Magazine we offer a sample issue. It is exactly like the regular monthly issues in every way - and that is vital. Don't spice up your free sample for the sake of marketing your product. The idea is to show the customers exactly what they'll get for their money. This is a trust-building opportunity.

PANDECTA SIDEBAR

Whatever you sell, you can sell more

It's amazing how few businesses - especially online -
realize just how important a professional PRESENTATION is.

You need to SHOW your potential customers that you are serious.
Good web design helps, but a second-rate logo will spoil every
attempt at converting visitors into trusting customers.

Without a professional logo, you will never "get e-commerce right".
Your logo will make or break the customer's first impression
of you, your site, your business and your products.

Click here for pricing information on professional logo
designs by Pandecta Magazine's graphic design team.

FREE INTERNET ADVERTISING TECHNIQUES
8...Special Offers

Your previous customers and e-zine subscribers should be made to feel special. They have trusted you with either their credit card info or their contact info or both, so treat them like gold.

Offer them specials, tell them about new products before you tell anyone else etc.

Send them something for free every now and again. Something other people have to pay for.

Never EVER use your communications with existing clients to push your latest product. Do you enjoy sales pitches in your inbox? Just make fuzzy! Sales will follow.

FREE INTERNET ADVERTISING TECHNIQUES
9...Free Services

Chances are that you found this page after you did a search for "Internet marketing for online business" - not because you knew about (or wanted to buy) Pandecta Magazine. At least now I've told you about Pandecta. The name will stick in your head forever. Pandecta Pandecta Pandecta!

Seriously, if your site, like ours, is about a single product, then you should consider offering something for free on the side (like this article). That way you attract people who could use your product but just don't know about it yet.

That is crucial in Internet marketing. Your online business has millions of potential customers out there. Free stuff gets them to your site - there you have an opportunity to sell your product - after delivering the free stuff you promised.

This is important. If you deceive your visitor she'll hit that dreaded back button before your entire page loads. Your page should deliver on the promises you make in the site description.

FREE INTERNET ADVERTISING TECHNIQUES
10..."Thank you" Notes

Always e-mail your customer within 24 hours after the sale. Thank them for their support. Ensure them that they can count on you for assistance, if needed.

It is vital that you make the thank you note as personal as you can. Don't leave a bitter taste in your new customer's mouth. Use the customer's first name and put your name at the bottom. Round it off with a return address like mary@pandecta.com. Not techsupport@443.ldf.freestuff.net.

Look Before You Leap's Early Teen Premiere meets with enthusiastic response from educators and parents!

I thought it was excellent. I wish this type of program was available when I was in school. As the mother of two young boys, it gives me hope that positive programs like "Look Before You Leap" exist and can help my boys make good decisions when they get older.

The film was educational, informative yet fun! It's what's not being said that is actually killing our kids. I love the fact that is was a diversity of culture and scenes...party, classrooms and reflecting one on one with self. Great job!
~Dallas County Truancy Court Employee

I thought the movie was awesome. It covered the good and bad of decisions our today's youth make without thinking about it. It was easy to follow and straight to the point. Great job!
~City of Dallas Employee

I thought "Look Before You Leap" covered great topics from a very relative point of view for students. Very up front and to the point. Very well done. ~Youth Pastor in Dallas Texas

A very entertaining and informative approach to the consequences to risky behaviors. A great way to get youth and adults to begin an open discussion on the subject matter.

Well done! I do STD and HIV/AIDS education in schools and high risk youth. This show would be a great introduction to other health issues.

XO Platform Conversion formerly known as 9Net Avenue

This page describes the migration process for XO customers who have services on the legacy 9NetAve platform, accessed via http://cp.xo.com. If you do not currently use http://cp.xo.com as your administration portal, these instructions do not apply to you! Only the legacy 9NetAve platform is being decommissioned -- all other XO/Concentric customers are on the current ongoing platform and are not impacted by these instructions!

This web page will be updated if we find common questions that we missed, so check back here for new information.

An email message was sent October 23-26, 2007, to the email addresses on record for domains still hosted on the legacy platform. That email contains a new password and a numerical support ID which you will need to complete the migration process to the new Concentric hosting platform. Your DNS service is already on the Concentric platform and has been for several years. You can cut email and web service to the Concentric platform at any time before November 29. On November 29, we will cut DNS for the remaining services on the legacy platform, which will be decommissioned on December 4th. You will need to make sure that all your files and stored emails are downloaded before December 4th, 2007, when the legacy platform is permanently shut down.

What you need to do
  • The first step is to log into your new Concentric account. The login and password were provided in the email you received; if you did not receive or have discarded that email, see below for how to contact Care to gain access to your account. Log into your concentric account here: http://admin.concentric.com

  • When you log in, after some introductory screens, you will be logged into the Concentric Gateway with its library of account and user tools. The login we provided you is a master administrator, giving it full access to the features of your account.

  • Your Concentric account has been set up on the Domain Manager plan, which provides the basic DNS service for your account. Since the Concentric plans do not line up directly with the legacy 9NetAve service plans (but are almost universally less expensive or have higher quotas), you have the opportunity to select your own service plan as appropriate for your needs. To do this, select Account | Controls | Change Service Plan from the menu bar. You'll be presented with several plan options. Note that the first list are standard plans with UNIX CGI tools. Windows plans are also available with the 'View Windows Hosting Plans' link; these plans support ASP.net and other IIS-specific features. NOTE that you will receive a month of service free upon upgrading your account to a hosting plan.

  • Once you've selected a plan, you can create and configure users of your account. To do this, select from the menu 'Menu Map | Users | Add New'. You can add your users here for email and, once added, edit further settings including turning on spam filtering (recommended). Users will continue to receive email on the legacy platform until DNS is changed. Please note that if you do not change plans you will stay on the Domain Manager plan, which is $7.95 a month.

  • To publish your website, you can use ftp (to ftp.concentric.com before DNS is cut), logging in as the admin@domain user and password sent in email, or you can use the File Manager application in the Concentric Gateway, or you can use FrontPage publishing. Full details on all publishing mechanisms are available in online documentation -- the 'Help' link in the upper right corner of the Concentric Gateway.

  • Once you've set up email and your web site, you can migrate service before the November 29 date if desired by using Concentric's DNS Manager. To do this, select 'Menu Map | DNS Manager' and then 'File | Open Zone File'. Select your domain (you may have more than one), open it, and then select 'Manage Zone | View/Edit Records.' Choose 'All records' from the pulldown, and when your records pop up, checkmark the 'delete' box on the left of each record, then hit 'Update'. This will remove all the DNS pointing your domain services to the legacy platform and will automatically point services to the Concentric platform. You can also do just email or just web services by deleting the email (and MX) record, or the www record, separately. If you'd rather not touch DNS, this will be done for you on November 29th. In either case, you may need to restart your browser/mail client to see the DNS change, which otherwise takes 15-30 minutes to propagate.
Help is available online, as stated above, in the 'Help' link in the upper right corner of the Concentric Gateway. You can also get help with your Concentric account at any time via careprem@concentric.com, or via phone at 1 866 495 9696 (+1 469 385 2242 outside the US). Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns.
